Elective Residency
The residence permit for elective residence is issued to foreigners who intend to settle in Italy and demonstrate that they have sufficient resources to support themselves independently without carrying out any work activity.
This type of residence permit can be issued:
- foreigners holding an entry visa for elective residence;
- to foreigners who held a residence permit for subordinate work or self-employment or for family reasons, by way of conversion of the residence permit.
That case refers to a worker who ceases to work and receives an old-age or old-age pension or an invalidity pension in Italy.
To obtain an entry visa for elective residence, the foreigner must prove that he or she has a home to live in and sufficient financial resources (such as pensions, real estate, economic activities) to support his or her own maintenance and that of family members. The evaluation of the economic guarantees is discretionary and is carried out by the Italian consular representations abroad. Visas can also be issued to dependent family members, provided that they have adequate financial means.
The residence permit for elective residence issued to the foreigner holding an entry visa for elective residence has the duration indicated by the visa, usually one year.
The residence permit is renewable as long as the conditions for its issuance remain, according to the general principles, by making a request at least thirty days before its expiry (Article 5 paragraph 4 of the Consolidated Law on Finance). It shall be renewed for a duration not exceeding that established at the time of the initial release.
